Round Robin Scenairo: Strategic Decision

1. Did the completion of the exercise help you understand the concept?

After completing the exercise it help me understand that as the case manager of my round robins I'm just someone who is there to guide the client. It is a strategic decision on how I am going to help the client. I didn't want to do everything for the client or make the decision for the client so I mainly asked the client how would like to handle the situation. Also,I understand who owns the problems and see how much the client can handle the situation before I can jump in to help. This will create the client to have self-determination and independence.

2. How hard was it to answer the questions or respond to the scenario's?

It was difficult to answer the questions because I couldn't just tell the client what to do even if I know the solution. Also I thought it was difficult because of little knowledge that I have about services and resources that will have someone who is visually impaired. I thought the most easy thing about answering the questions was telling the client to continue with receiving the support that that client already had and encourage the client to accept the supports given.

3. How hard was it to give feedback?

Giving feedback to me was a great experience. I like that my other group member included the help from services in the community such as counseling services and having the client go to support groups that have the same situation as the client.

4. Rate your own answers

I rate my own answers as 80%

5. Rate your ability to give feedback

I rate my ability to give feedback 90%

6. Discuss the importance of what you have learned.

I have learned it's important that the case manager don't solve the client's problem. The client own his/her problem and that if the client solve his/her problem, the client will gain self determination and independence. It's also important of being carefully of how far the case manager will get involved. The decision is base on the helper's knowledge and on the opportunity that can be use to help the client grow. Even if you see all your clients as helpless, the best way to help the client is to help the client help themselve.

  1. You definitely have to have the client come to their own conclusion when making decisions yet you certainly want to steer them in the correct direction of the matter.

  2. I would say that not only do you not make decisions for other people, but you really cannot be effective in your role as a helper if you become the decision maker. People need to learn how to make decisions and then own those decisions. You can be a resources, a shoulder, ateacher, etc, but in the end the person you are helping must learn to help themselves.
